Cherokee Nation Hosts Eastern Band for Joint Council Meeting

August 29, 2002

Cherokee Nation New Release

TAHLEQUAH-The Cherokee Nation will host the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in a Joint Council Meeting Friday, August 30.

The historic meeting brings together two largest Cherokee tribes to discuss issues of mutual interest. The combined Councils will pass several resolutions outlining areas of agreement and commitments to work together in the future.

“Our main purpose is to develop a closer relationship,” said Leon Jones, Principal Chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. “It’s a way of keeping communication lines open and a way of working on issues of mutual interest.”

“This meeting will help us get better acquainted, to work in good harmony and keep our government folks together,” said Johnny Keener, Cherokee Nation Tribal Council Member.

“We can share some ideas that can be of benefit to both tribes,” said Buel Anglen, Cherokee Nation Tribal Council member. “We bring the two tribes together and they bring their ideas and we see how they live and they see how we live.”

“We have been separate for so many years and this is a good chance for fellowship,” said Carroll Crowe, Vice-Chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. “Even though we are not close together, we have a lot in common.”

“We share a common language and culture with the Eastern Band of Cherokees,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “We have a unique relationship and we use these meetings to make that relationship stronger.”

“It’s just a great fellowship of east and west,” Crowe said. “It all started in the eastern region. If you go back far enough, I’ve got some relatives that came out here. We’re all the same people and that’s how we feel about it.”

The Joint Council Meeting will take place at 9 a.m. on August 30 in the Cherokee Nation Ballroom, located behind the Restaurant of the Cherokees south of Tahlequah on Highway 62. The Councils of the Eastern Band and the Cherokee Nation have invited the public to attend the Joint Council Meeting.
