Cherokee Nation Delivers Check for Collinsville Public Schools

February 5, 2003

Collinsville News

COLLINSVILLE—The Cherokee Nation presented a check for $12,281 to Collinsville Public Schools Friday. The money will be added to the general fund for the schools.

The money comes from 38 percent of the revenues from the sale of Cherokee Vehicle Tags. The amount each school gets is figured on the number of Cherokee students in the schools. "This couldn't have come at a better time for schools," Collinsville Public Schools Superintendent Pat Herald said. "Now that the Cherokee Nation has stepped up to the plate, it sets an example for other tribes."

Collinsville Indian Education tutor Nancy Phelps said that the paperwork is always available for more parents of Cherokee students to sign them up at the schools. This would allow Collinsville schools to get more money from the program next year.

"The allocation of funds is based on how many Cherokee students go to a local school," District 8 Tribal Councilman Nick Lay said. "This is above and beyond all federal money for schools," said District 8 Tribal Councilman Buel Anglen.
